Benefits of Spearmint
If you have been keeping up with my blog posts lately, you might have noticed a certain herb making an appearance a few times. I love mint. Something about the subtle flavors it gives drinks is so refreshing and satisfying to me. It's the ultimate summer herb in my opinion. My obsession with the herb lately had me wondering if it had any other amazing traits besides flavor and smell. Turns out it does!
The entire mint family is known for its soothing effect on the stomach. The herb could help with morning sickness during pregnancy, as well as stomach cramps and nausea for those not pregnant. It could even help with gas, as well. Basically if you notice your stomach isn't very happy with you, whether due to a cold or that large lunch you had earlier, make yourself a mint tea and you should notice a decrease in discomfort.
Spearmint is also used to soothe sore throats, colds, headaches, and toothaches due to ints anti-inflammatory properties. Next time you are under the weather, make yourself a green tea with a few mint leaves. It can be placed directly on skin to reduce swelling. If you are suffering from a toothache, try placing a mint leave on that tooth for some relief. At least to make the drive to the dentist bearable!
Some other interesting facts is that mint can have a calming effect, which is good to remember for finals week. Mint has a surprising amount of vitamin A and iron. Vitamin A is important for normal vision, the immune system, and reproduction. Iron is need to make hemoglobin, which is a protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen throughout your body. Pretty cool stuff, and to ensure you are getting enough of either, include mint (in addition to other foods high in vitamin A and iron) to your everyday diet.
