I had a request a few blog posts ago to share my simple syrup recipe. For that recipe I had actually used store bought, mint flavored simple syrup, but it had me thinking about trying to make some at home. Coincidentally, we ended up making some in my food lab this week so I thought I would share it with you all. Now depending on what flavored simple syrup you want, the recipe will change a bit. I will share the one we did in class that we then used on a sponge cake with some buttercream (so delicious, so sweet). I also include a mint flavored one since I obviously have a small mint obsession lately. Let me know if you want me to share any other flavors in the comments below!
Simple Syrup - Kahlua Flavored (pictured above)
3/4 cup liquor
1/4 cup water
1 cup sugar
Stir liquids together with sugar over medium heat. Let simmer until slightly thickened, coating the back of a spoon. That's it!
Stored in fridge, this recipe should last about a month.
Simple Syrup - Mint Flavored
1 cup water
1 cup fresh mint leaves
Place all ingredients in small pan, and bring to boil. Stir until sugar dissolves. Simmer for 1 minute, then remove from heat.
Let syrup steep for about 30 minutes.
Strain syrup to remove mint leaves, then store in fridge up to one month!
*the mint flavored will be lighter in color than the kahlua
