Benefits of Basil

June 17, 2017

Everyones favorite herb, the basil! I don't know anyone that doesn't love the smell of it and/or enjoys sprinkling it into their dishes (if you don't like basil, this post is definitely not for you!). It's hard not to find this herb in an herb garden, or any garden for that matter, so whats' so special about this little thing? Read below to find out!

  • Basil is high in vitamin K. Vitamin K is important for blood clotting and maintaining healthy bones to name a few of its functions.

  • Manganese, copper, and vitamin A can also be found in this herb, but at much smaller levels. These can help improve cardiovascular health thanks to their abilities to protect cell walls from free radial damages and improve blood flow.

  • Basil comes full of antioxidants and phytonutrients which are found to be DNA protectors.

  • The oils from basil have been found to be antibacterial.

  • Basil is also anti-inflammatory, thanks to one of its essential oils. A natural ibuprofen!

This favorite and versatile herb is not just delicious, but also packed with great health benefits. Buy some fresh herbs to keep on a sunny windowsill during the summer for never ending supply. Throw them on pizza, in tomato sauces, or sandwiches for extra flavoring.

If you are interested in growing herbs all year round, try a hydroponic system! I received one as a birthday gift a few years ago. I love the fact that I can grow herbs from seeds and keep them alive year round. I start my herbs in the hydroponic system during the late fall and keep them in the system until it is warm enough outside again for them. Then I plant them in pots on my porch to enjoy. Currently I am growing flowers in the hydroponic system, because who doesn't want fresh flowers in their home?!
