Oma's Meat Pie

June 30, 2017

This recipe may seem a little strange, but trust me, it is delicious! This is a Swiss specialty and no one makes it better than my mother, who got it from her mama :]. You’ll have to get your hands dirty, but the dish is fairly easy to make. Have it with a side salad and this is the perfect meal!

  • ½ lb. ground beef

  • ½ lb. ground pork

  • optional: could use all beef, but will be more crumbly

  • 1/3 brät (uncooked bratwurst)

  • optional: uncooked chicken sausage, squeezed out of skin

  • 1 small onion, diced

  • 1 garlic clove, minced

  • 1 cup slightly staled white bread, cubed and soaked in liquid

  • 2 tbsp. chopped parsley

  • 1 egg

  • salt/pepper to taste

  • 1 tbsp. ketchup

  • 2 round puff pastry sheets

    1. Sauté onion and garlic until glazed.

    2. Squeeze liquid out of bread and add to pan with onion and garlic until dried.

    3. Add parsley, sauté 2 minutes; let cool slightly

    4. Place in bowl: egg, onion/bread mix, meat, and seasonings. Mix well. Hands work best here.

    5. Place 1 pastry sheet in pie dish. Poke holes throughout with fork.

    6. Spread mixture out evenly onto pastry sheet.

    7. Place top pastry sheet on top. Poke with holes as well. Seal the sides nicely to form a crust.

    8. Bake at 350°F for 30-40 minutes.
