March is for Nutrition!


If you follow me on social media, you may have already seen a few posts this month that mention national nutrition month. March is national nutrition month which means all registered dietitians or dietitians in the making (aka me!) essentially get a free pass to bombard you with anything nutrition related. :)

Don't get me wrong - I think this is a great way to get important concepts out in the world for discussion. This year's theme is "Go Further with Food". Essentially, the goal is to provide resources to the public to help manage food at home, which can save money and nutrients!

I provided a useful resource this week on the website that offers 10 ways to reduce waste at home. If you are interested in it, you just need to subscribe to my mailing list and you will get it directly into your inbox!

In addition to reducing waste at home, there are several other important messages that go along with this year's theme:

1. Include a variety of food items in your everyday diet - think of the colors you are enjoying every day through your food! Eating a more color filled diet ensures you are getting various nutrients from your food.

2. Watch your portion sizes - if you take large portions, but only end up eating half, not only are you wasting food but money as well! Consider saving some for later or splitting one portion into two. A lot of us would be surprised to find out what a portion size really is. Sources like MyPlate are great to get a visual understanding of portion sizes.

3. Get moving - Of course, it isn't all about food. Physical activity is too important not to mention! Go outside and enjoy a walk in the sun (or a run), go hiking, swimming, weight lifting, play frisbee, soccer (need any more examples?!). The list is endless for fun activities that are good for your body and soul. As you probably have heard me say before, I love walking! Getting outside and moving my body (preferably with the sun shining) doesn't amazing things for my mood. Find what you enjoy and make an effort to include in your weekly schedule.
